Cambodia & the Khmer Rouge
In 1975, Communist rebels known as the Khmer Rouge established a very harsh and vicious Communist government under the leadership of Pol Pot. As the head of Cambodia, Pol Pot tried to transform Cambodia into a Communist state. Under his instructions, his people killed about two million people while trying to make a Communist government. In 1978, Vietnam invaded and overthrew Pol Pot and his government. They also set up their own less prohibiting government, but fighting still continued. As a result, Vietnam withdrew in 1989 and in 1993 under the supervision of the United Nations peacekeepers, and Cambodia became a free democratic state.
